Based out of Cape Town, South Africa, Katherine-Mary Pichulik is not only a trained artist but also a pastry chef. After working in a bakery and interning at a fine arts magazine in London, she went on a backpacking trip to Spain and India that would set the scene for her future. PICHULIK was founded in September 2012. In 2015, Italian Vogue named Pichulik one of the top 10 African fashion brands to watch. Inspired by her travels and what she calls the “intimate relationship women have with jewelry,” the brand is empowering and made for the brave and courageous woman. “If the PICHULIK brand was a person she would have a wicked sense of humor, a strong yet inspired presence. Kind, wise eyes that speak of many journeys through exotic lands,” says Pichulik. She creates her jewelry using local rope from a company that supplies the yachting sailing industry and found objects. The brand has also collaborated with a number of other artists and designers. For example, the collection made in collaboration with Design Afrika and Dunoon Urban Weavers features bags woven in traditional Xhosa style finished with PICHULIK’s signature rope and Tuareg leather tassels.
