Marianne Fassler designs clothing from her creative workshop Leopard Frock in Saxonwald, Johannesburg. Fassler has over 30 years of experience in the fashion business. She sells her garments retail from Leopard Frock as well as doing private consultations. Drawing inspiration from the environment of Johannesburg and South Africa as a whole, her work reflects the lifestyle, climate, and aesthetics of the world around her. Fassler began her university studies at the University of Witwatersrand, pursuing a degree in Fine
Arts, but soon after felt a disconnect with traditional fine art media. She changed her major to Art History and Afrikaans/Dutch Literature. Fassler began making clothing for herself and others and found it to be much more rewarding than traditional fine arts such as painting or sculpture. She studied fashion design and patternmaking part time while developing her business. Craft, color, and texture are defining features of her designs. Fassler creates clothing that responds to the needs of active, engaged, professional women. Talking about South African fashion Fassler says, “In essence, being African in many ways is unique, distinctive and exotic.” She emphasizes that South African fashion is about self-expression and showing one’s unique identity.
