Laduma Ngxokolo founded his knitwear brand MaXhosa by Laduma in 2010. The brand was born from a desire to create knitwear suitable for amakrwala (initiates of the Xhosa people). Upon being initiated into manhood, they are expected to ascribe to the tradition of wearing new formal clothing for the following six months. Ngxokolo has himself gone through this process and says, “I felt that I had to develop knitwear that genuinely depicted my cultural aesthetics.” He draws inspiration from traditional Xhosa beadwork, colors, and symbolism. Ngxkolo also designs women’s clothing including knit skirts and ponchos, drawing from the same inspiration. MaXhosa by Laduma is currently based out of Cape Town but sources its mohair from his hometown of Port Elizabeth and uses locally sourced merino wool. Ngxokolo has won numerous awards and attracts an international audience from South Africa, New York, and several European countries including London and Paris.
